An International Blues Challenge (IBC) Winner Appears In Buffalo

Matt Andersen from the Canadian province of Nova Scotia put on a well-received hour-long opening set at Buffalo’s Waiting Room on Friday, November 7th.  Opening for Doyle Bramhall II, Matt put on an incredible show, quickly winning the audience’s attention, thus adding to his fan base the many that had probably come to just see Bramhall.

All of the staff at Waiting Room were wonderful, and went out of their way to get me a stool and place from which to take notes.  It’s a very nice facility and it would sure be nice to see more blues artists appear there, especially if house soundman Neal is on duty.  Neal brought out the best of Matt – whose gorgeous voice and amplified acoustic guitar sounded terrific!  Not the same can be said for Doyle’s band that had their own soundman for their loud ninety minute set.

The Waiting Room holds around 450, but only has chairs/barstools for less than 60 butts.  This show was advertised as a 7:30 P.M. start; but Matt took the stage at 8:10 P.M.  Bramhall took the stage at 9:30 P.M. -- just twenty minutes after Matt’s encore tune.  Early in Matt’s set those standing moved closer to get a better view of this incredible talent!  Undoubtedly this singer/songwriter/guitarist has some of the fastest fingers of anyone who ever picked up the instrument.

He uses thumb and finger picks like Doc Watson; and even while playing double-time on one tune, he managed to impart feeling through his nuanced picking.  And one need not listen hard to hear it. His voice is just as beautiful, dynamic, soulful and nuanced as his playing.  So easy to see why, as a solo act in Memphis, he was judged best in the Solo/Duo category at the 2011 IBC, an annual event of the Blues Foundation.

Review of JON DRETTO self-titled CD

This six song CD is the first release from Jon Dretto. Nuclear Blues is how Jon refers to his style of blues, an apt description.

Poisons Sipped by David Michael Miller - Review

After just one listen I knew why over 85 radio stations worldwide have aired this first solo release by David Michael Miller.  His wonderfully soulful voice is incredible…with a to-die-for falsetto…used to great effect, and so sparingly, as to be an unexpected and enjoyable treat.

  Thank You! Minimize

I am truly astounded. A small group of very hard working friends came up with a dream, and made the dream a reality. The dream was to create a blues festival – the first Buffalo Niagara Blues Festival. The reality was that the festival was a great success.
I am truly honored to have worked with these extraordinary people over the past year. I cannot begin to describe the trials, pitfalls, hurdles, and obstacles that fall in the path of such an endeavor, but it is even harder to describe the dedication of the team that overcame each and every one of these challenges.
The festival was an enormous success, and when the numbers are tallied, I believe we will have raised enough money to increase our Blues in the Schools budget, do more to promote local blues acts and venues, plan for next year’s event, and perhaps plan for additional events. I sincerely hope that we have accomplished a goal far more important and more valuable that funds raised – awareness of what we do and how valuable the people that help us are. We need to grow the ranks of people involved with our organization far more that we need to raise money.
Having said that, I want to thank everyone on our committee –Kim Alessi, Nancy Remington, Kathy Miehs, and Daria Sterner. Most importantly, I need to thank our Festival Chair, Chuck Laedke. His experience with this type of event, and his boundless energy and enthusiasm are the reason this event was possible. Without Chuck, we would not have had a festival. The Blues Society and the blues community in Western New York owe him an enormous debt of gratitude.
I’d also like to thank Adrienne Thompson, Karl Reifschneider, Anita West, Stan Levine, Sandra Verge, Shelley Lewandowski, Joanne and Dan Drodzak Fran Denk, Sid Alfasso, Cecil Davis, Sharon Schneider, Sue Sherman, Diane Decker, Meg Covert, Kathy Hall-Zientek and John Calderella, and of course the countless volunteers that all worked so hard.
We also need to thank the people in our community that believed and trusted us enough to invest in our dream – our sponsors. Most notably the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation and Arts Services Initiatives,  whose grants allowed us to proceed with a free concert. Also our major sponsor Armor Inn Entertainment, and our exclusive Media Sponsor WBFO 88.7, as well as the Seneca Casinos, Georgetown Capital, Northtown Automotive, and Buffalo River History Tours.
Thanks – and we’ll see ya next year!
