BLUE NEWS

NOVEMBER 2016

Going on 25…No, not me! The Blues Society of WNY!

For more than 500 current members, I think I can safely state that most of us are in this for the same reasons. First, of course, we love the blues…that goes without saying. But there’s also passion for the arts and our community.

Over the past 25 years, your Blues Society has played a significant role in keeping blues music vital and evolving. Introducing the genre to audiences of all ages, we create new interests and expanded interpretations. You, our members and audiences, are the reason this all-volunteer organization can continue with our programs and events, making a noteworthy impact in our community…more than 20,000 students have been introduced to the genre through Blues in the Schools.

An exciting new venture we’re involved in is Distance Learning. The project is coordinated by the New York State Distance Learning Consortium and sponsored by the Blues Society of Western New York. The program streams live to sites around the state and even to an elementary school in London, England, where a teacher and students interact via streaming video. In the initial session on November 7, we focus on background information about blues music as well as the creative links between songs and stories. Students will then perform songs to get a basic sense and feeling for the blues. Next, they will explore how songs tell “nearly” complete stories, leaving it to the imagination of the listener to fill in. Special thanks to National Recording Artist, Tas Cru, for his efforts and expertise in this exciting project!

By the way…mark your calendars for the weekend of October 17, 2017; our 25th Anniversary Committee is working on great ways to celebrate!

PLEASE JOIN US…there are a lot of ways for you to get involved. Interested? Contact me at athompson@kideney.com . We have lots of options and I’m sure I can find just the right opportunity for you!

Your Blues Society of WNY President,

Adrienne Thompson

NURS'N BLUES - Educational Outreach Program

Nurs'n Blues is an innovative music therapy program specifically utilizing Blues music to help adolescents, young adults, adults and veterans struggling with chemical dependency, PTSD and hurting souls.  The Blues Society of Western New York collaborates with this program created by Patti Parks and presented by a Board Certified Music Therapist, Sheila Connors (Blues Society Member).

Nurs'n Blues operates on the premise that Blues music can be the vehicle through which positive changes are made in the daily lives of those struggling with addiction.  The very nature of Blues music is one of identifying and releasing feelings, sadness and heart break.  More importantly however, the Blues teaches us to overcome these challenges.  The genre reveals stories of triumph and perseverance which can help participants to become inspired to achieve their goals. The program offers a music education component and a music therapy component.  Participants learn the history and structure of the Blues (educational) and then are encouraged to use the Blues music as a conduit for their emotional states (Music Therapy) during structured group sessions.  The Therapist addresses the following goals: appropriate/enhanced emotional expression, improvng social interaction and interpersonal relationships and increasing self-esteem and overall feelings of self worth.

One hour weekly group session are presented at:

Kids Escaping Drugs - Renaissance House, West Seneca, NY: 11-19 attendees/week.  January 4, 2016 start date and on going.

Horizons Village, Sanborn, NY: Horizons has 7-15 (21+) attendees/week, Delta has 8 young adults (18-30) attendees/week.  October 20, 2016 start date and on going bi-monthly.

This Blues Education program continues to grow and the Blues Foundation in Memphis is very interested in what we are doing here in WNY.  THIS IS ONE OF THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS THAT YOUR MEMBERSHIP DUES SUPPORTS.  THANK YOU TO OUR MEMBERS FOR MAKING THIS HAPPEN!
